Jeni’s Wedding Day Needed Her Dad’s Heart

It’s been ten years since Jeni Stepien’s father passed away. Like every young woman – visions of walking down the aisle with her dad in hand on her big day were always in her thoughts. But how was that possible?

Through the power of organ donation – Arthur Thomas was the lucky recipient of the heart from Jeni’s dad. Jenny decided to track him down before the wedding date of August 6th, and ask the man who was the closest person to her dad – if he would walk her down the aisle. How could Arthur say no? It would be an honor and a small price to pay for such a gift – so he traveled from his home in New Jersey to Pittsburg, Pennsylvania to walk this woman whom he had never met before – down the aisle on the biggest day of her life.

One organ donor can save up to eight lives. The same donor can also save or improve the lives of up to 50 people by donating tissues and eyes, according to LiveonNY.

More than 123,000 people in the United States are currently on the waiting list for a lifesaving organ transplant. Another name is added to the national transplant waiting list every 12 minutes. On average, 21 people die every day from the lack of available organs for transplant, says the American Transplant Foundation.

The Next Leap Forward

The biggest gift in life – is the ‘gift of life’. Perhaps we should all consider organ donation. When you think in the terms of the lives you can impact with such a selfless act – it just makes sense. Arthur was so grateful first for the heart that saved and extended his own life – but we can just imagine how special he must have felt when he got the call from Jeni that would include him in her special moment.
