Even sharks can’t diminish the hope of this 16 year old.
Hunter Treschl was in waist-deep water on a North Carolina beach when disaster struck. “We were just playing around in the waves, and I felt a hit on my left calf,” Treschl said. “I thought it felt like a big fish, and I started moving away.
And then the shark bit my arm — off.”
“I have two options: I can try to live my life the way I was and make an effort to do that even though I don’t have an arm, or I can just let this be completely debilitating and bring my life down and ruin it,” he said.
“Out of those two, there’s really only one that I would actually choose and that’s to try to fight and live a normal life with the cards I’ve been dealt.”
It doesn’t get anymore remarkable than that. Young Treschl was faced with a critical decision – be a victim or victor over tragedy – he chose the later and that will make all the difference!
Each of us has cards that were dealt to us that we’d prefer not to have – but this is called fate. Life is full of moments of fate and there is nothing you can do to change that. But what you can do – is to change the outcome!
That’s right change the outcome. How do you change the outcome you ask? Treschl figured that out – take the tragedy and turn it into triumph – period. He doesn’t have all the details – he will figure them out but he does know that he prefers a life that is of his choosing – not one that is tormented in tragedy.
The Next Leap Forward
The first step it to accept the situation.
It’s impossible to change the outcome if you can’t accept your fate. Treschl is fortunate – he discovered this almost immediately after the horrific event.
For most, there will be a period of denial, grief, despair and then maybe – they will be able to face their new reality.
For others, they will take the tragedy and turn it into a badge of honor – forever making them stronger, wiser and fearless.
Treschl has a big future ahead him – FEARLESS!
