The wish was for Daniel to see the film at a private screening, before the December 18th premiere – not easily done since this is one of the most highly anticipated films of the year.
Director JJ Abrams said he wanted to give Daniel a private screening of the four-hour unedited filmuncut version.
Update to Story: Five days after Disney and Lucasfilm fulfilled his dying wish to see The Force Awakens, lifelong Star Wars fan Daniel Fleetwood has succumbed to cancer. His wife Ashley posted on Facebook: “Daniel put up an amazing fight to the very end,” wrote Fleetwood’s wife, Ashley, on her Facebook page. “He is now one with God and with the force. “He passed in his sleep and in peace. He will always be my idol and my hero. Please hug uncle Marc for me and give Lucy lots of kisses. Rest in peace my love.”
Daniel, 32, is dying from spindle cell sarcoma, a rare form of connective soft tissue cancer that was discovered in 2012.
In March 2013 there was some hope, after believing he was tumor-free from the surgery.
Two months later a scan found cancer in his lungs.
On Sept. 2, they were told he had two months to live; reports the Washington Post. “People ask me to describe it, it’s like … it’s impossible to describe the pain you feel, there’s no words,” she said. “I’m just so touched, I love him and I wanted it to happen for him,” says Ashley Fleetwood.
“Daniel really wanted to see that movie. That was the thing he was hanging on for,” his father, Dennis Fleetwood said. Daniel is a big Star Warian – he would often go with his dad to see the Star Wars films as a child, and even camped out for tickets.
The Next Leap Forward
Daniel Fleetwood worked in the mental health field – his goal was to leave a mark on the world, he wanted to make a difference, said his wife Ashley.
When he found out he was dying – it left him unsettled in that he wouldn’t be able to accomplish all the good he’d hoped to do.
Now, with the outpouring of love shown for him, “he feels like now he’s given some people hope,” she said, “or a new perspective on life.”
What is the ‘something’ that you can change for the better?
How can you best impact the lives of those around you?
Shouldn’t we all strive to leave a mark of good on the world?
Director JJ Abrams knew the significance of his gesture – by changing the rules slightly he not only fulfilled a man’s dream – but he gave hope to millions more. Think of how many people are lifted up because of this story!
Abrams belongs on the Brink of Greatness, and so does Daniel. He wanted to leave a mark of good and hope for the world – what an unselfish thought – especially at his most challenging moment of life.
