“I think people undervalue making people happy,” Colts Punter Pat McAfee
On the field, he’s earned a reputation as a ‘real competitor’, off the field he is a man that is dedicated to making the world a better place. Indianapolis Colts punter Pat McAfee is known for his colorful personality – it shines through both on and off the field. ESPN states that “Colts punter Pat McAfee is a colorful character, someone great to follow on Twitter and listen to because you’re probably going to hear something interesting.”
That probably explains why his jersey is the 17th-highest selling NFL jersey in the league. They say it’s unusual for a special teams player to break into the top twenty best-sellers at any point of an NFL season.
“I think people undervalue making people happy,” McAfee says. Over the holiday season, McAfee decided to make a great many people happy, by paying the electric bills for 83 families.
McAfee made an inquiry to the Indianapolis Power and Light, asking them for the busiest hour of the week at the “pay in person” customer service desk. Which just happened to be an hour before closing on Fridays, which is payday for most customers.
He then paid $18,000 for 83 families – so that people in the community might experience more holiday cheer. Everyone in line had the biggest surprise of the season when they arrived at the counter with the news that Pat McAfee had covered the bill for them.
The utility tweeted the news out – Through the generosity of @PatMcAfeeShow, 83 customers surprisingly had their electricity bills paid this afternoon. McAfee followed up the day after with his own tweet. Just trying to do my part to make this world a happier place.. I hope you all have a great Saturday.
McAfee’s connection with fans goes far beyond his play on the field. This past year he put on a comedy show at a local theatre, the ‘Palladium’ to prepare for what he hopes will be a his new career after he retires from football. The money he raised went to his foundation. “All my material comes from life experiences”, says McAfee in this video interview he did with the IndyStar. “It’s my job to give them a good show. And that’s what I’m going to do,” he said. “I’ve been working hard to get them a good show because people spent money on this, which is so humbling and mind boggling to me. But, people bought tickets.” Did they ever buy tickets. Within 10 minutes of going on sale, all seats to the McAfee comedy show were gone. Two hours later, a second show was announced. It immediately sold out – reported the IndyStar.
The Next Leap Forward
I think you would agree with me when I say – we can all use a little more happiness in the world! I immediately start to think – what if we could multiply this concept of spreading happiness around the world.
We can. It all starts with your own world – your community.
This is the ripple effect that can change the tide from fear and grief to hope and happiness. It doesn’t take wealth and barrels of money either. Any good deed can turn a frown into a smile.
Try it. I promise you – it comes down to the intention behind the deed – this is what excites people. Just to know that you took the time, that you cared – will start that ripple effect I talk about.
“Everything we do, even the slightest thing we do, can have a ripple effect and repercussions that emanate. If you throw a pebble into the water on one side of the ocean, it can create a tidal wave on the other side.” Victor Webster
What a fantastic gift – and all to create just a little more happiness in the world!
